Next Monday, the Jerusalem District Committee will discuss the plan to cover Begin Road.

It involves covering about 1.6 km of multi-lane road on the stretch from the Hebrew University's Givat Ram campus to the Beit HaKerem neighborhood.

On the covered area, which spans about 210 dunams, a park will be built and alongside it residential buildings up to 40 floors high, as well as commercial, employment and public buildings.

The project's cost is estimated at NIS 1.2 billion, and the budget should come, according to the municipality's vision, from marketing the land.
Derech Begin is a road about 16 km long that crosses Jerusalem from the city's western entrance to the Gilo neighborhood in the south. According to the Jerusalem Municipality's vision, the cover will create an urban continuum between the Beit HaKerem neighborhood and the Givat Ram campus and Kiryat HaLeum, protecting the shade trees and the walking and cycling paths.

The plan will transform this area, which until now was a heavily trafficked street, into an integral part of the city by adding 1,800 apartments, around 250 assisted-living apartments, 300 hotel rooms, about 10,000 square meters of commerce and approximately 36,000 square meters of employment space.

The Begin Road covering plan is being promoted by the Israel Land Authority (ILA) and the Jerusalem Municipality through the Jerusalem Development Authority. The plan was prepared by the architecture firm Kolker Kolker Epstein.
