Underground: the unique sports hall of the Jerusalem Heikhal HaPais Arena

The Jerusalem Municipality and the Ariel Municipal Company are promoting the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall in the "Arena Pit", a huge underground space located beneath the main hall of the Heikhal HaPais Arena.

The new sports hall, which will be built about ten meters underground, will have 499 seats and will be standard size for holding basketball games. It will also be used for handball and volleyball games and will serve the city's sports associations. Users of the hall will also have new and advanced locker rooms. In addition, a unique perimeter running track, a gym and the possibility of an ice rink will be built around the underground hall. On the mezzanine, above the new basketball hall, a commercial complex, bowling, a cafeteria, technical rooms and offices will be built. In addition, construction of an additional entrance to the arena from street level will be completed soon, allowing quick access to the new basketball hall at the pit level via elevators and stairs.

The project has been promoted in recent years by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon, the municipality's director general Itzik Lari, the municipal management and attorney Elisha Peleg, former deputy mayor and holder of the Sports and Lottery portfolio. The project is currently in the detailed planning phase and is managed by Doubleman Porcelain inproject.

The Heikhal HaPais Arena, located in the Jerusalem International Sports Complex, celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and is the largest indoor sports venue and cultural, entertainment and leisure center in Israel. The venue, managed by the Ariel Municipal Company, covers a total area of 47,000 square meters and includes 6 levels, a 2,400-square-meter arena, 12 stands, 16 viewing boxes and a multi-purpose hall with more than 11,000 seats. At the center of the venue's roof is an LED cube that serves as a video and scoreboard with an area of approximately 200 square meters, one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Currently, construction work on the light rail in Kiryat HaSport is at very advanced stages, so that in the not-too-distant future the light rail will reach the Pais Arena, Teddy Stadium and the Jerusalem Tennis Center, greatly easing the arrival of the many fans to Kiryat HaSport and their departure after games.
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon stated: "Building a multi-purpose basketball hall on the underground level of the Heikhal HaPais Arena is a unique project that, in addition to making the most of the huge space located beneath the arena, will give a real answer to the needs of the sports associations and the promotion of sports in the city. This project is another important component of the city's enormous investment in competitive sports in our city. In the coming years, we are also expected to invest in the city's sports facilities to continue consolidating Jerusalem's status as Israel's sports capital."

Uri Menachem, CEO of the Ariel company: "Promoting the construction of a multi-purpose sports hall on the lower level of the Lottery Arena is another pillar of the development drive taking place at the Jerusalem Sports Complex in general and at the Heikhal HaPais Arena in particular. The new hall will support the city's sports associations in the various sports and will also allow major events and sports activities to be held simultaneously, both in the arena's main hall and in the new hall on the lower level, for the benefit of the city's residents and of all those who pass through its doors."
