Preliminary Works Have Begun on the Mega-Project

The station complex is about to change its look: preliminary works on the mega-project have begun.
An underground Israel Railways station, two light rail lines, a cable car that will connect the neighborhood directly with the Old City and the Western Wall, cultural, commercial, entertainment and hotel centers, residential projects and public spaces. This is how the new gateway to the capital will look
The Station District, Jerusalem's new entertainment, tourism, business and residential district, is already under construction and is expected to become a modern and lively district every day of the week. The district will be an innovative transportation hub and a new gateway to the capital, encouraging the use of public transportation and offering comfortable green pedestrian paths, pleasant shaded rest areas and 1,000 meters of bike lanes.
A new underground train station, "Khan Station," with three entrances will be built in the district. Two light rail stations (Blue Line) and the first cable car station to the Old City will also be built, offering a unique and spectacular experience that will take travelers directly to Jerusalem's Old City from an aerial view of the City of David and Israel's historic sites.
As part of the large project, which is being managed by the Jerusalem Municipality through the Eden Jerusalem Economic Development Company, cultural, entertainment and leisure centers will be opened in the district, historic buildings will be preserved, and there will be residential, employment, hotel and commercial projects. The project covers approximately 350,000 square meters and will include approximately 29,000 square meters of public space, approximately 24,700 square meters for commerce, approximately 23,900 square meters for employment, approximately 89,500 square meters for hotels (approximately 1,400 rooms) and approximately 180,000 square meters for relatively low-rise residential construction. When the district is completed, it is also expected to include approximately 364 public parking spaces.
The district is located between the neighborhoods of Talbiya, Mamilla, the German Colony, Baka, Ramat Rachel and Givat Hananya, about 38 minutes by train from Tel Aviv and about 23 minutes by train from Ben Gurion Airport.
Through the Transportation and Education Master Plan team of the Jerusalem Development Company, preliminary works have recently begun, within which development work is being carried out in the Khan complex in order to prepare for the light rail and to work on the Railway Park. As part of the preliminary works, in the coming days the Track Park will be installed. Appropriate signs will be placed in the area to guide pedestrians and cyclists.
During the works, the existing leisure complex and the Railway Park will continue to operate for the benefit of visiting members of the public. The first station district will be built in staggered stages, and the public will be involved in a fully transparent manner with the implementing agencies, residents and local businesses, at all times, to ensure the success of the project and maximum consideration during the work period. During the works, public parking lots for visitors to the complex will continue to operate in the district.
Transportation and Road Safety Minister Miri Regev stated: "In 1892, the first train left Jaffa in a festive ceremony and, after four hours, arrived at the Khan station in Jerusalem. It was a historic journey that connected the coastal plain with Jerusalem, a trip that until then required a day and a half of arduous travel by train. Since then, transportation has been the main engine and has driven social, economic and cultural change. Today we see once again how transportation measures are transforming the image of the city, bringing commerce, employment, housing and leisure to areas that greatly need them. The Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety will work to ensure that the transportation infrastructure is completed on time and enables the growth of the new old town in the First Station complex."
Mayor Moshe Leon stated: "The First Station District is a project of international standing that will constitute a new tourism, commercial and cultural center in the city of Jerusalem and the first modern transportation hub of its kind in Israel. The project will constitute a new gateway to the capital and will connect Israel Railways with the light rail in a single place, with a cable car leading to the Old City, the urban bike lane network and the Railway Park. Residents of Jerusalem and visitors from across the country and abroad will benefit from a district that will create synergies between tourism, entertainment and leisure, employment and business, and cutting-edge transportation."
